Born in Richmond, VA, Lyon grew up loving the sea. When he was fourteen, Lyon’s family went to the Bahamas for vacation, where he snorkeled for the first time. A love was born. One year later, in 1984, he became a NAUI Openwater diver. College took Lyon to University of Miami and the clear waters off Florida’s coast, where he continued to explore the underwater world.
Lyon studied archaeology at UM, and for three summers in the early ‘90s he worked underwater at the archaeological site of Caesarea Maritima, off the coast of Israel. To this day he is thankful to the Israeli Navy divers and archaeologists who shared their diving knowledge and experience with him.
After Israel, Lyon moved back to Virginia to pursue his greatest love: a girl named Susan who would become his best friend and wife. A ten year hiatus from diving ensued while life took Lyon by the neck and forced him to grow up and get a real job.
Several real jobs and a decade later, Lyon was ready to get wet again. In 2006, he resumed diving. In ’08, he took his Advanced class, then earned his Penetration Wreck certification. Nitrox and Rescue Diver soon followed. Now Lyon is living his dream as an intern at Atlantis Divers and is a Divemaster in Training. He dives with the Atlantis Team whenever he can, and is always ready to help when needed. He is extremely grateful to the entire Atlantis Crew for making him feel welcome and for their leadership and willingness to share their knowledge.
